We’re Proud Of What Happens Here
Americans have strived to build a more just society since the dawn of the Revolution, when the framers etched “to establish Justice” into our national consciousness by using the phrase in the very preamble of the U.S. Constitution. Years passed before our leaders made good on that national promise through the establishment of a federally funded organization whose very purpose is to help bring about “equal justice under law.” The Legal Services Corporation Act of 1974 was the final piece of major legislation to cross President Nixon’s desk. It had bipartisan support in Congress, and he signed it into law. Three decades later, LSC pursues the same cherished ideal that inspired its founding. We’re still working to make justice a reality for everyone. We’re 30 now, no longer an infant institution. Our age is starting to show. We are wiser, able to help more people more efficiently than ever before. We’ve moved out of rental space and now have a beautiful home of our own…thanks to the Gates Foundation for that. Before we take the next big step, though, let’s fold out these pages and recall where we have been. Let’s remember who brought us here (Other Voices). Let’s listen closely to those who continue to show us the way (Their True Calling). And let’s never forget the people who need us the most (Daycare Dreams, Fighting For Their Rights). On the Legal Services Corporation’s 30th Anniversary, let’s all pause for a moment to take pride in our past and aim for a more just future.
